How do I exclude criteria from my search?

Sometimes when doing a search, you may think that you may have too many results to be able to do any worthwhile analysis of them. From here, it is worth refining your search. One way of doing this is by excluding criteria from your search. There are four different ways you can do this within CAS Scientific Patent Explorer.

The first way to do this is by selecting the "NOT" operator from the drop-down found next to the fields on the advanced search page.

Once you have done this, you can type into the text boxes of the fields that you have selected the "NOT" operator for and these will then be added to your search query.

The second way to do this is by typing the Boolean operator NOT into one of the text boxes. This can either be the main search bar or one of the boxes next to the search options.

The third way is to use the refine search option in the top left-hand corner above the filters section of the results screen. Click the "AND" to change it to a "NOT" and then type into the text box to exclude results.

The fourth way is to use the filters on the left hand side of the results page. By selecting any of the refinements, you are given the option to "Refine" or "Exclude" that specific filter. Click "Exclude" and this will exclude that filter/ result.
